What is the difference between a “used transmission”, “transmission repair”, and “transmission rebuild”?
A ”used transmission” is a transmission that has been in a car for a certain number of miles, but is currently not in a vehicle — commonly sold online and found in a junkyard. In a “used transmission”, parts of / from or whole transmission, older second-hand transmissions, discontinued models, imports, salvaged, aftermarket product typically or from older replacement, spares, low mileage auction and / or scrapped vehicles, are ‘removed’ transmissions from car junkyards. ”Used transmissions” usually carry a 30 day warranty or no warranty at all. Used transmissions come “as is” and may have weak internal parts which may lead to another transmission problem not far down the road.
A ”transmission repair” is fixing the problem, normally the cheapest process, as it does not always require removing and disassembling the whole transmission (standard leaks, fluids, small failures, routine care and maintenance etc.). If need be, the transmission is removed, disassembled, ONLY the part causing the problem is replaced. This does not include disassembling, cleaning, and inspecting the valve body or pressure testing the torque converter, as in a FULL rebuilt transmission. This does not include replacing all of the soft parts, as in a FULL rebuilt transmission. It does not include cleaning each parts thereof, as in a FULL rebuilt transmission. It does not include replacing all of the substantially worn parts, as in a FULL rebuilt transmission. A “transmission repair” carry a lesser warranty 12k miles or one year whatever comes first most shops offer this or sometimes no warranty, because they know the rest of the soft parts are going to wear out in time and can't give a warranty on the unknown. A “transmission repair” fixes the current problem, but may still have weak internal parts, which may lead to another transmission problem not far down the road.
A ”FULL rebuilt transmission” is usually interchangeable with “exchanged”, “swapped”, “re-manufactured”, “reconditioned” or “overhauled” transmission. The transmission is removed and disassembled. All soft parts such as gaskets, seals, clutches, and O-rings, filters are replaced. "All internal parts" have been thoroughly cleaned and inspected. The valve body has been disassembled and thoroughly cleaned and inspected. With NEW torque converter. All impaired defective, or substantially worn parts not mentioned above have been restored to a sound condition or replaced with new, rebuilt, or unimpaired parts. All measuring and adjusting of such parts has been performed as necessary (to OEM specification). All FULL rebuilt transmission usually carry a longer warranty. We offer a 40,000 mile limited warranty with no time limit.
In conclusion, a used/repaired transmission may cost less at that moment but cost more in the long run with labor cost and having to repair again with in a short time, than a FULL rebuild, it may not fix your problem for the long term. When you are purchasing a used transmission or repairing your transmission, you are taking your chances odd's are against you most times. A used/repaired transmission may initially work after installed, but may also have pending internal damage to some of the gears, valves, manufacturer defects, or seals. If you purchase a used transmission that has such flaws or damage, you may have saved yourself a few hundred dollars at the beginning, only to spend two to three times as much later when you still need to have the transmission FULLY rebuilt.
How much will the Transmission Rebuild cost me?
The exact total cannot be determined until a tear down of the transmission is done and we determine the hard parts needed. Hard parts are broken or substantially worn parts in the transmission. A transmission FULL rebuild includes 100% soft parts replaced. Hard parts are broken/damaged hard parts that must be replaced for the transmission to function up to OEM specs. Green Transmissions offer fix pricing so no matter what is needed you will not pay more then quoted, unlike most repair shops who nickel and dime after getting you in to there shop. Give us a call so we can help you fix your transmission and get you BACK ON THE ROAD with no add on pricing "what we quot is what we will charge."

How does Green Transmissions diagnose the transmission?
Upon the arrival of a vehicle diagnosed with a transmission problem via telephone we also take further action to further validate by doing the one or more of the following:
- Diagnostic Service - level and condition of the vehicle's transmission fluid is examined.
- Road Test - consists of two segments, a stationary test and driving test which together test for slipping noises, harsh, soft or erratic shifting as well as late or early shift problems or Flashing "D" light on dash
- Lift Inspection - point inspection of the vehicle's neutral switch, engine rpm, throttle linkage, manual linkage, transmission mounts, U-joints, fluid retention, and /or electronic controls
- Drain Plug Examination - allows our specialists to inspect the inside of the transmission to determine if there is evidence of internal damage.
- Small amount of Dust like build up is ok on the Drain plug, "ONLY" if the transmission fluid is "bright RED"
- How to check for bad transmission fluid. pull dip stick from the transmission and drop a drip on to a white surface and check for color.
- * " BRIGHT RED " = fluid is in good shape * " Burgundy Red " = fluid is in the beginning stage of burning * " Light Brown " = fluid is burnt " Really brown, Black " = 100% Burnt fluid
- What makes the transmission fluid BURN? slipping clutches will burn the oil as it gets hot and hotter it gets the color of the oil will change from RED to Burgundy, Light Brown , Really Brown , Black in color.
